Fearing God More Than Man
Ex. 1:17 - “But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.”
The king of Egypt was willing to have untold numbers of infants killed to give himself peace of mind. It was this kind of man that the Israelite mid-wives were choosing to disobey when the saved the boys. Twice in the first chapter of Exodus the text tells us how they “feared God.” Their reverence for who God was gave them the strength to set aside the king’s orders.
How often do we allow our fear or respect for other people influence us to lay aside God’s commands? When we do that, it is because we have things backwards. Like the mid-wives in Egypt, we need to fear God more. We need a greater awareness of who he is and what he is like and only serve him!
